Who’s taking away Native Americans land?

by Is-Rael Landes 12/5/18

“On September 7, the Department of Interior formally took the Mashpee tribe’s land out of trust status.” (Hopper) During the Obama administration, the Department of Interior placed two plots of land from the Mashpee into a trust. This reversal of action by the Department of Interior is due to rival business owners and casino developers suing the federal government. Aside from the grounds for the lawsuit, this is NOT an acceptable move on the federal government’s side as we’ve seen in the past other cases of land being taken from Native Americans. Those responsible for the actions of the Department of Interior fall on Trump appointed Secretary Ryan Zinke and Deputy Secretary David Bernhardt.

Currently, there is a Reform Act in place with efforts to reverse the bureau’s ruling.
